Mind & Body in Harmony: Why Mental Health Deserves a Seat at Your Primary Care Visit
In Kansas City and beyond, primary care visits have long focused on blood pressure, cholesterol, and physical ailments. But at Trinity Woundcare & Wellness Clinic, we believe that mental health is just as vital as physical health, and it deserves the same attention during every check-up.
Mental and emotional wellness deeply impact the body’s ability to heal, cope, and thrive. That’s why Dr. Judy and her team take a holistic approach—screening not only for chronic diseases but also for stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma.
The Overlooked Epidemic
According to the CDC, more than 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness, yet fewer than half receive treatment. For Kansas City residents, this means countless individuals are walking around with invisible burdens—often untreated for years.
“Primary care providers are uniquely positioned to identify and manage common mental health conditions early, especially when patients may not seek psychiatric help on their own.”
— Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2024
Why It Matters in a Primary Care Setting
Mental health and physical health are deeply intertwined. Anxiety can raise your heart rate and blood pressure. Depression can increase your risk for chronic pain and fatigue. Trauma can disrupt sleep, digestion, and even immune function.
When we treat only the body, we miss half the picture. That’s why our care model at Trinity includes:
Routine mental health screenings
Collaborative care with therapists and counselors
Medication review for mental health impact
Safe, stigma-free conversations about emotional well-being
What to Expect at Your Visit
During your wellness visit, Dr. Judy may ask questions about:
Your mood and sleep patterns
Stress levels at home or work
Energy and motivation levels
Coping strategies or past trauma
This isn’t about judgment. It’s about healing—whole-person healing. And in our Kansas City clinic, you’ll never feel rushed or dismissed.
“Integrated care models, where behavioral health is embedded in primary care, lead to better outcomes and lower costs.”
— American Psychological Association, 2023
